Bradford #1 Democratic Challenger in Pennsylvania

    3. Republican Jay Moyer vs. Democrat Matt Bradford in the 70th Legislative District

The race between the freshman Moyer and the charismatic Bradford is ground zero for shifting party control in Montgomery County. The GOP's once iron-tight grip on the county has given way to a rising tide of Democratic candidates, but both parties see reason for hope in this race.

In 2006, Moyer, of Lower Salford Township, beat Democrat Netta Young Hughes by only 103 votes. At first, it seemed like he got a break this year when his opponent on the ballot, Dwayne Royster, stepped aside for personal reasons. But Democrats replaced him with Bradford, a former municipal official with strong fiscal credentials and a reputation for being a fervent campaigner. Bradford has had to run an abbreviated campaign, but party officials consider him a stronger candidate than Hughes.

"Matt's always been high on our list with this particular seat," county Democratic Party chairman Marcel Groen said. "He's young, he's energetic, he's hardworking. We hope and expect that he'll win."

Dem registration has Bradford feeling confident in MontCo

Throughout the state, down-ballot Democrats have rejoiced in their party's voter registration gains spurred by a historic presidential primary, a contested general election and overall distaste with the national GOP brand. Thursday morning, Democratic state House candidate Matt Bradford e-mailed his supporters with his own good news.

Bradford, who is running to unseat state Rep. Jay Moyer (R-Lower Salford) in Montgomery County's 70th Legislative District, announced that Democrats now outnumber Republican in the district. The margin stood at 222 voters Thursday morning, with new registrations still being counted.

State House candidate Bradford airing first campaign ad

Democrat Matt Bradford is airing his first advertisement in his bid to represent the 70th Legislative District.

The 30-second spot (embedded below) is a soft biographical piece, featuring Bradford on camera talking about his upbringing and his family. It starts with the candidate recalling working in his parents' flower shop.

"That shop was their hope and our family's best chance for a better future," he says, telling voters he wants to be their state Representative to "be an advocate for families who are searching for their own chance for a better future."

The ad is airing on local cable, campaign manager Rob Zolitor said...

    Party leaders tout local candidates

By: MARGARET GIBBONS , Times Herald Staff
COURTHOUSE - Keep an eye on the new faces, say the leaders of Montgomery County's two major political parties.
Democratic Chairman Marcel L. Groen and GOP Chairman Robert J. Kerns said they believe several "fresh faces" in the upcoming elections could provide the most interesting races on the November election ballot.
"I think the contest that will surprise people the most is Matt Bradford's challenge of Jay Moyer," said Groen. "Matt came into the election late, but you'll never know it by Election Day."
Bradford, a Democratic lawyer from Worcester and former administrator in Norristown, is seeking to unseat freshman incumbent state Rep. Jay R. Moyer, a Lower Salford Republican who edged Democrat Netta Young Hughes by 103 votes for the open 70th District seat in 2006.
